The Saturday-night room the Bureau holds as the principal goth-and-industrial venue in the English-speaking world for thirty-three years, and the founder whose death closed its structure.

The club opened on New Year's Eve 1987 in a late-Victorian steel-works warehouse at 7 Torrens Street, behind Angel tube station in Islington, north London. The building had been a squat for several years previously; it had no licensing, no heating to speak of, no fire-safety apparatus that would satisfy any subsequent decade's regulators, and, for the first several years of operation, no bar (drinks were brought in by attendees, who paid £3 at the door and bought from each other inside). The founder, Mayuan Mak (known universally as Mak), had been a leading figure in the London squatting scene through the mid-1980s and ran, alongside with the venue, a scrap-metal business out of the same building. The conjunction of those two businesses meant that the club's furniture, for most of the first decade of its operation, was whatever Mak's metal yard happened to have surplus to: military hardware, dismantled industrial plant, salvaged stage rigging from defunct West End theatre productions.

The name is a parody. In the summer of 1987, before the move to Electrowerkz, the night ran for a brief period in a disused church on High Holborn. The contemporaneous Limelight club, in Shaftesbury Avenue, was also held in a disused church and was the goth-and-industrial scene's first-choice venue at the time. Slimelight is the joke at Limelight's expense; the joke turned out to outlast its target by about three decades. The Limelight closed in 2003. Slimelight, in the same week, marked its sixteenth anniversary by adding a third dancefloor.

The structure of the night is, with minor variations, unchanged since about 1990. Doors at ten, last entry at three, kick-out at half-past seven in the morning when the London Underground starts running and the attendees can get home. Three floors (sometimes two, sometimes for special editions four): a goth-and-post-punk floor playing the canonical Sisters of Mercy / Bauhaus / Joy Division register; an industrial-and-EBM floor running the harder side of the catalogue including the canonical Front 242 / Skinny Puppy / Nitzer Ebb material into the contemporary aggrotech and dark-techno register; and a middle floor that has historically hosted dark synthpop, occasional noise-and-power-electronics takeovers and the periodic Wax Trax!-themed nights that the resident DJ network insisted on running. The membership system was, until about 2010, the venue's principal admissions network: prospective members required nomination from two existing members and a brief interview at the door. The Bureau holds that this system, more than any other single factor, kept the venue's particular character intact for as long as it did.

The club's role across thirty-three years is substantial. The Bureau holds that any reasonable account of the post-1987 anglophone goth-and-industrial scene must reckon with Slimelight as its principal Saturday-night room, in the same sense that the Hacienda is reckoned with for Manchester acid house, the Mudd Club for late-1970s New York no-wave or the Batschkapp for Frankfurt's mid-1980s EBM. The venue's particular gravity was a function of continuity rather than novelty: the same room, the same founder, the same broadly-defined editorial position on what the night should sound like, weekly, for over three decades. Visiting goths and industrial musicians on the European touring circuit treated a Saturday-night appearance at Slimelight as a fixed point in their London week.

That gravity ended with Mak's death on 9 December 2020. He was 55. The venue was already closed for COVID-related restrictions and would not properly reopen for nearly two years. The night resumed under different management in 2022 and continues to operate on the same Saturday-night calendar at the same address. The Bureau holds, without judgment of the current management or the community that continues to attend, that what made Slimelight weighty was Mak and that what remains is the apparatus of a club night, rather than the institution that the apparatus once housed.

Chronology.

Squat to institution to memorial · 1985 to 2020

c. 1985 · The Kit Kat Club. The night Mak ran in the mid-1980s, before the Slimelight name; held in various rooms including, briefly, a building in Stoke Newington. The Bureau holds the Kit Kat period as Slimelight's pre-history rather than its first phase proper.

Summer 1987 · The Slimelight name. For a brief period the night ran in a disused church on High Holborn. The Slimelight name was coined as a parody of the contemporaneous Limelight (also held in a disused church, in Shaftesbury Avenue and the era's premier goth venue). The High Holborn period was about three months; the church reverted to its prior use and the night required a new home.

New Year's Eve 1987 · The Electrowerkz opening. Mak relocated the night to a squatted late-Victorian steel-works warehouse at 7 Torrens Street, Angel. The building had no licensing, no heating, no bar and no stage rigging. About 80 attendees arrived for the first night. Slimelight has operated continuously at this address since.

c. 1989 to 1992 · The unlicensed period. Operated as an after-hours members-only night with attendees bringing their own alcohol. Mak built out the venue's infrastructure progressively over this period, principally from his adjacent scrap-metal business.

c. 1992 · Licensing. The venue acquired its first proper alcohol licence; Electrowerkz became a fully-functioning licensed nightclub. Slimelight's prices remained substantially below the London average and have done so ever since.

1990s onward · The defining period. Slimelight became the principal Saturday-night room for the anglophone goth-and-industrial scene. The three-floor configuration consolidated. The membership system kept the door's editorial position intact through the genre's mid-period; the Bureau holds that the years 1993 to about 2010 are the venue's classical phase.

2008 to 2009 · The Double Club intermission. The ground floor of Electrowerkz was temporarily reconfigured to host artist Carsten Höller's pop-up restaurant Double Club, a collaboration with Prada; the project ran November 2008 to July 2009 and brought Mak's venue an unexpected art-world cameo without disrupting Slimelight's Saturday programming.

2016 · San Junipero. Electrowerkz was the filming location for the Black Mirror episode San Junipero, which won two Emmy awards in 2017. The episode's nightclub scenes are filmed across the venue's floors; the Bureau notes the cameo without endorsing the episode's proposition that nightclubs can be recreated digitally after the founder dies.

March 2020 onward · Closure. The venue closed for COVID-related restrictions.

9 December 2020 · Mak's death. Mayuan Mak died, age 55. The memorial procession a fortnight later included a tank, converted into a hearse, drawn from Mak's military-vehicle collection.

2 July 2021 · The Plan: A Tribute to Mak. A four-volume compilation curated by the Slimelight DJ collective and released on Bandcamp, with proceeds to charity. The compilation runs across the venue's full genre spectrum from tribal industrial through dark ambient, neofolk, minimal wave, post-punk, gothic rock, noise rock and ethereal; a substantial number of artists who had performed at the venue across the years contributed.

2022 onward · The post-Mak era. The night resumed under new management. It continues to operate at the same address on the same Saturday calendar.

Mayuan Mak.

Mayuan Mak, known universally as Mak, founded Electrowerkz in the late 1980s and ran the Slimelight night at the venue continuously from New Year's Eve 1987 onward, for thirty-three years. He was a leading figure in London's squatting scene through the 1980s, ran a scrap-metal business from the same building and accumulated, across the decades, a collection of military hardware that included tanks, dismantled aircraft, armoured vehicles and five yellow mine-disposal submarines, much of which remained on the Torrens Street premises through his lifetime and is documented in the obituary record.

He died at home on 9 December 2020. His funeral procession a fortnight later featured a tank, converted into a hearse and drawn from his own collection, carrying his body to St Pancras and Islington Cemetery in East Finchley. Donations to his memorial fund exceeded £12,000 within days.

The Bureau holds that Mak's particular achievement was continuity: a Saturday-night room at the same address, broadly the same programming, the same editorial position on what a goth-and-industrial club should be, every week for thirty-three years. The Bureau notes that institutions of this kind are made by a single person who refuses to let them stop and that they tend not to survive the disappearance of that person, however well-loved the apparatus is by the community that continues to attend.

The Bureau records its respect for Mak's work, its sadness at the manner of his passing and its conviction that the venue's particular weight in the genre's record is closed at his death.

After Mak.

The post-2022 era · continuity without the central axis

The night resumed in 2022 under different management and continues to operate on the same Saturday calendar at the same address. The Bureau notes the continuity factually and the editorial discontinuity equally: the apparatus of a club night is not the same thing as the institution that the apparatus once housed. The Bureau's position is not a judgment of the people who currently run the night, several of whom worked alongside Mak for decades and care about the venue's tradition as much as anyone; it is a position about what makes an institution weighty and a recognition that this particular institution's particular weight ran on a particular person's continuous personal investment.

The Bureau makes no recommendation as to whether readers should or should not continue to attend Slimelight in its present configuration. The venue remains the best-priced after-hours room in central London on a Saturday night, and the dress code remains strict in a way the Bureau finds editorially congenial. What the venue was, however, ended in December 2020; what continues at the same address is a different proposition.

Readers who disagree with this editorial position are welcomed to argue with the Bureau via the colophon contact.
