Twenty-eight years of continuous American independent label method from the post-1990 noise and industrial-techno structure, operated continuously by Dominick Fernow alongside his Prurient and Vatican Shadow methods.
Hospital Productions is the American independent label founded in 1998 by Dominick Fernow at age 16 in Madison, Wisconsin, simultaneously alongside his Prurient project as the recorded-document structure for his own method. The label's catalogue prefix is HOS, running from HOS-1a (Prurient's A Simple Mark cassette, 1998) through 270+ catalogue entries across the 1998 to 2026 period. The label is methodologically distinct from the foundational American noise networks (RRRecords in Lowell MA from 1984, Hanson Records in Oberlin OH from 1994): Hospital Productions is at the generational position between the foundational American noise network and the contemporary American dark-music distribution network, with a method that has extended across power electronics, harsh noise, industrial techno and adjacent forms within a coherent curatorial editorial vein.
The label's structure consolidated through the brick and mortar shop at 60 East 3rd Street in NYC's East Village, operating from 2006 to December 2011. Initially located in the basement of the record store Jammyland and accessible via trap door and ladder, the shop later took over the space when Jammyland left; through the 2006 to 2011 period the shop functioned as structure for the NYC noise scene, with Fernow working as engineer and packager alongside the label's curatorial direction. The Bureau notes the shop as the American noise venue of the post-2000 period: the method (limited cassette and CD editions, exclusive in-store releases, the scene-shaping role the venue performed for the NYC noise community) constituted network beyond label as distribution method.
The in-house cataloguing routes through Fernow's own working projects. Prurient (the foundational F·07-power-electronics method, 1998 onward, with LPs including Pleasure Ground 2006, And Still, Wanting 2008, Bermuda Drain 2011 as the turn toward synth and rhythm-inflected method, Frozen Niagara Falls 2015 on Profound Lore as the American noise scene's editorial masterpiece, Rainbow Mirror 2017 on Profound Lore) constitutes the label's F·07 method. Vatican Shadow (Fernow's industrial-techno alias from 2010 onward, with the foundational LP Kneel Before Religious Icons 2011 establishing the method's dance-floor-functional turn from Prurient's harsh-noise idiom) constitutes the label's F·18 industrial-techno method and the Bureau cross-reference for the American Hospital Productions axis filed at F·18 industrial techno. Adjacent Fernow projects (Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement the death-dub method, Ash Pool the black metal method, Exploring Jezebel the more recent method) extend the cataloguing across multiple sub-form positions within Fernow's structure.
The roster across the catalogue's 28-year period extends across the contemporary American and European noise and industrial-techno structure. Alberich (Kris Lapke, joined c. 2006; psychological warfare-inspired electronics, modular synthesis, field recordings; roster anchor) constitutes one of the label's continuing roster anchors. Lussuria (Jim Mroz, emerged as core artist late 2000s), Pharmakon (Margaret Chardiet, one of the contemporary American power-electronics release figures), Silent Servant (Juan Mendez, collaborator with Fernow; the Sandwell District structure extension), Alessandro Cortini (former Nine Inch Nails contributor, vinyl series on Hospital Productions), Phase Fatale (Hayden Payne, the F·18 industrial techno-tangent cross-reference; Redeemer 2017 the LP), Shifted (Guy Brewer, Bed of Nails sub-imprint roster), Function (David Sumner, collaborative Vatican Shadow LP Games Have Rules 2014), Merzbow, JK Flesh (Justin Broadrick), Ron Morelli (L.I.E.S. Records central figure; multiple Hospital Productions LPs), Kelly Moran (split with Fernow), and Steve Moore extend the roster across the contemporary cataloguing.
The Bureau's view is that Hospital Productions operates as the third consolidation of F·18 industrial techno alongside the UK Birmingham method (Downwards 1993) and the international Sandwell District (2002–2011 / reformed 2023), filed at F·18 industrial techno as one of the three F·11 structures. The label's F·07 power-electronics cataloguing through Prurient and the adjacent roster constitutes the continuing American power-electronics method of the post-1990 period. The method (the Bed of Nails sub-imprint, the Vatican Shadow industrial-techno cataloguing, the Fernow editorial direction, the continuing brick and mortar shop precedent, the vinyl + CD + cassette + digital method) constitutes the label's contemporary structure. The label remains active in 2026 with continuous release programme; the 28-year continuous period sits among the longest unbroken American independent noise label releases.
