RRRecords sub-imprint, about mid-1990s onward through January 2000, run by Ron Lessard from Lowell, Massachusetts as a low-cost CD operation in identical black-and-white slipcase packaging; filed at Tier II as one of the period's clearest examples of imprint-as-concept within the American collector-noise network.

Pure is the budget CD sub-imprint of RRRecords, run by Ron Lessard from the Lowell, Massachusetts record shop and label operation Lessard has sustained since 1984. The sub-imprint is editorially distinct from its parent through a single sustained operating principle: every Pure release was issued on CD in an identical black-and-white slipcase, at a retail price Lessard held constant across the entire run. The visual manner did not change. The price did not change. The catalogue expanded; the object stayed the same. The imprint is, in this sense, a piece of conceptual editorial work as much as a record label, and the Bureau files it under that reading.

The roster ran through two directions. The first was Lessard's own work as Emil Beaulieau, the noise-performance project he sustained from the late 1980s through his 2006 retirement: several Pure releases document Beaulieau material at the budget price and within the identical packaging programme. The second was Japanese harsh-noise material from the network RRRecords distributed in the United States across the 1990s, mainly the Merzbow / Hijokaidan / Incapacitants / Masonna / Aube / K2 orbit that Lessard's mail-order operation routed into American listeners' collections through the period. Pure functioned, for that material, as the entry-level price-point and identical-packaging programme within the RRR catalogue framework.

The anti-record concept Lessard developed under the Beaulieau name (records treated by melting, drilling, painting or otherwise altering the physical object so that the resulting playback becomes a noise document) sits in the RRR network as a conceptual through-line and is present in the Pure catalogue. The Bureau notes the anti-record method, the lock-groove releases on the parent imprint and the Pure identical-packaging programme as three pieces of the same editorial position: the record as physical-conceptual object first, the recording as secondary. The position is consistent across Lessard's operations and the Pure sub-imprint is its most sustained application to a single catalogue format.

The framework around Pure includes one sister sub-imprint the Bureau notes: Lowell Records, the RRR sub-label that documented Lowell-area punk and hardcore artists across the same approximate period. Pure and Lowell sit as the two named sub-imprints in the RRR operation, with Pure carrying the harsh-noise material at the budget price and Lowell carrying the regional punk-and-hardcore material. The parent label retained the sprawling catalogue and the RRR-prefix numbering; the sub-imprints carried their own visual palette and editorial direction within the operation.

Pure stopped in January 2000. The imprint's closing was specific to the sub-imprint: RRRecords continued operating, Lessard continued performing as Emil Beaulieau through 2006, the record shop in Lowell remained open. The Pure series simply ended at that point and was not resumed. The Bureau files the closing as the conclusion of a sustained conceptual editorial programme rather than as the failure of a commercial operation; the format-and-packaging discipline the imprint maintained across its run is editorially coherent with its terminal date.

The Frans de Waard book America's Greatest Noise (Soleilmoon, 2024) documents the Lessard operation in detail and includes the editorial history of the Pure sub-imprint among its subjects. The Bureau notes the book as the available source for the granular editorial history of the operation; the present file documents the imprint's position within the RRR structure and within the American collector-noise field rather than its full release history, which is held more elsewhere.
