50 Beck Road in Hackney, London E8, was the London premises of Throbbing Gristle, Industrial Records (Industrial Records), and later Psychic TV across the 1976-to-about-1985 formative span of the genre this archive mainly covers. The premises was a terraced house in the Hackney artist-squat network that had developed across the East End of London during the 1970s in the wake of the area's industrial decline and the cooperative-housing environment of the period. Genesis P-Orridge and Paula P-Orridge (née Brooking) were the residents; the TG personnel network (Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter, Peter Christopherson) operated from the premises across the band's entire 1976–1981 period.
The studio at 50 Beck Road was designated "the Death Factory", a name that became across the TG and IR record and that operated simultaneously as a studio identifier, an editorial statement of intent and a Hackney-specific positional joke about the environment the band was operating within. The studio room itself was modest in scale · a single room on the upper floor of the terraced house, with a Revox B77 reel-to-reel cluster (two units, sometimes more), a tape-loop library that grew across the period, cassette-duplication equipment for the IRC·00-IRC·35+ live-tape series and the TG instrumental setup distributed across the available space. The method was deliberately domestic-scale: the premises was the residence, the studio and the label office simultaneously, and the separation between domestic-life and recording-life that conventional commercial-studio methods assumed was deliberately collapsed at Beck Road.
This collapse is the fact the file documents. Western Works (S·001) operated on the same band-owned-studio method principle as Beck Road from the same period; the template of the first-wave industrial-and-adjacent genre was developed at these two premises alongside across about the same 1976–1981 span. The premises differed in scale (Western Works was a single rented studio space within a larger derelict building; 50 Beck Road was a whole terraced house in domestic use) but the principle was identical: the band-owned studio with installed equipment dedicated to the artists' compositional practice, operated outside commercial-studio logic, with recording and rehearsal continuous with domestic life. The records made at 50 Beck Road document the entire TG studio catalogue plus portions of the IRC cassette series. The Second Annual Report 1977 (IR0002, filed at R·001) was recorded and post-produced at Beck Road, with live recordings from the band's 1976–1977 performance archive later edited and mastered at the premises. D.o.A: The Third and Final Report 1978 (IR0004, containing Hamburger Lady, the chart pick at audio slot 12) was recorded mainly at Beck Road during the 1977–1978 period. 20 Jazz Funk Greats 1979 (IR0008, filed at R·003) was made entirely at the premises during the 1978–1979 period and is the masterpiece of the founding TG catalogue. Heathen Earth 1980 (IR0009) was the live-in-studio document recorded at Beck Road on 16 February 1980 with a small invited audience present at the premises. The IRC cassette series duplicated the band's live-performance archive at the premises across the 1979–1981 period; the cassette-network economy of the early 1980s later scaled this method into the genre's default for low-cost archive distribution.
Following Throbbing Gristle's dissolution in summer 1981, the premises continued in use under the later projects of the founding personnel. Psychic TV was founded at 50 Beck Road in 1982, with Genesis P-Orridge and Peter Christopherson re-uniting at the premises and the early PTV catalogue later recorded there across the 1982–1985 period. Temple Records, P-Orridge's label vehicle for the PTV catalogue and adjacent projects, was headquartered at the premises during the same period. The network around P-Orridge across the early 1980s (including the contemporary SPK and Coil correspondences, the Hackney-and-Brighton occult-art network, the PTV personnel rotation across the 1982–1985 period) operated from Beck Road as the London anchor.
Genesis P-Orridge and Paula P-Orridge departed 50 Beck Road in about 1985, later relocating to 33 Roundhill Crescent, Brighton, where the Psychic TV operation continued across the 1985–1992 period. The 1992 Scotland Yard raids on both premises (the 16 February 1992 raid on Roundhill Crescent, prompted by police investigation into allegations later dropped, with a parallel inventory taken at Beck Road) generated the documented record of items seized from both addresses; the inventory itself, later released as part of P-Orridge's documentation, is the published evidence of the Beck Road method's scale across those years. Lincoln Avenue in Chicago, which received Chicago Landmark designation on 6 February 2025).
